SUCCESS STORIES

Each one of us at Onword Therapy is committed to your goals.  We consider it a privilege to walk with you from consultation to registration and insurance, evaluation through treatment, and from therapy into life.

We are honored to share in the journey of our patients, and we look forward to helping you write your own success story!

Onword Therapy has taught me how to be able to learn on my own and no longer do I rely so much on others to help me with learning. I have gained SO much insight on how I learn and how to teach myself that I now enjoy reading and seeking out the reality of the world at large! I often speak very highly of Onword Therapy to my friends and family. Being in the profession that I am in, I regularly get opportunities to strongly urge people who believe or know they have a learning disability or brain damage to get tested and get help. The experience and time I put into attending sessions and doing what was suggested at Onword Therapy was the best investment I have ever made for my education and professional life.

Until there's an incident that affects your life personally or someone's life you know . . . you don't completely undestand how subtle traumatic brain injuries are and how TBI change others' lives also!

I am grateful for all those who help put the laughter and sunshine back into the empty spaces.

We have been so thankful that we chose Onword to help our 8-year-old daughter conquer her stuttering.  I was so impressed at the amount of focus that her therapist and their program put on normalizing stuttering and how it can impact self-esteem.  They evaluated how she felt when she stutters and talked about how stuttering impacts her socially and academically.  They asked her how she felt about it and not just me as a parent.  They focused not just on the tools and skills she needs to help her stutter when it happens, but also on how to thrive in a world that can sometimes be cruel to someone who struggles or falls a little outside of typical.  I couldn't have been more happy with this focus and have never seen it before in any other program. Thank you Onword, from the bottom of this mama's heart.

I don’t feel so alone anymore!  I feel much happier going to Onword Therapy. They specialize in head injuries and my memory and speech are better because of them!!!  They gave me activities to improve my issues (memory, word retrieval and slurring) and insecurities in speaking in public. I really enjoy the support group because it is very beneficial, and I have made many friends!

The new times of the pandemic brought about a loss of schedule and structure. The struggles I had with traditional schooling were exasperating and I felt completely out of control. Working with Onword and Katy has helped me to not only adjust to work with the pandemic but has also provided me a new way of approaching my life and workload. Katy takes the time to design strategies based on how your brain works that make the changes feel natural instead of stressful. I learned that attention and ADHD impacts so many areas of life that had never occurred to me. The new understanding I have of my brain has shown me how to not only better handle my areas of struggle, but also what a strength my capacity for attention is. Katy is incredibly intelligent, encouraging, and insightful. I am so grateful for what I have learned at Onword and look forward to expanding it to other aspects of my life.

Before starting my sessions at Onword I felt like I was a person that was completely out of control. I had fought and ignored the signs and symptoms of my traumatic brain injury for almost a decade. And then I was referred to Onword and Katy. At first, I was like really? This is supposed to help me? But Katy did not give up on me and she showed me that there can be control and a meaning in my life. My life now is not as chaotic and I have put old Todd aside and listen to the new Todd that she helped me find. I feel like I owe this all to Katy and Onword. I am so thankful for being referred to you.

Treatment at Onword has helped me to get a correct diagnosis which illuminated the struggles I silently experienced for years. Knowledge is power! Nan at Onword has helped me to understand how my mind works, bringing me from a cycle of chaos and underachievement into full-time productive employment and completion of my doctorate! I started seeing Nan when I had failed out of college, lived in chaos and had difficulty maintaining part-time employment. My symptoms initially presented as treatment-resistant mental health disorders. Unless you have executive dysfunction, you may never understand how much it impacts every part of your day. I now understand that symptoms like anxiety and depression are naturally concomitant with the distress and extra effort someone with executive functioning difficulties requires to keep up with the world.

Nan helped me to have the insight and strategies I needed to be successful in my daily life. With Nan’s supportive coaching, I progressed to successful and stable full-time employment. Eventually I returned to college, with more strategies and help from Nan. She has helped me to capitalize on my strengths and work with my thought processes and not against them with each major transition. I’m happy to say that I will graduate with my doctorate next year! I feel so very fortunate that I had the treatment I needed from Onword to clarify how my mind works and get the tools I needed to follow my dreams. The clinicians are compassionate and talented with a ‘magical’ toolkit that helped me to make the most of my abilities, learn to encourage and motivate myself, and provide me with the knowledge and strategies I need to follow my dreams.

'Unmasking' Event Helps Brain Injury Survivors

Nan Kennelly possesses a wealth of knowledge about the intersecting world of speech pathology and brain injury which makes her an incredible asset to survivors, other professionals, and the community as a whole. Recently, all of Onword Therapy’s staff became Certified Brain Injury Specialists (CBIS) and Nan herself became one of the few CBIS Trainers in the state. We at the North Dakota Brain Injury Network (NDBIN) rely on Nan to help out with planning the state Mind Matters Conference, volunteering her time to provide training to others, and serving as Chair of the North Dakota Brain Advisory Council. All of the staff at Onword Therapy are professional, well-educated, and dedicated to serving their clients to the best capacity possible, making Onword Therapy one of our first referrals when a client is seeking speech-language services following a brain injury.
